The unexpected benefits of CCTV in the workplace

Wherever they are in the world, vehicle importers and fleet operators, parts suppliers, garages and workshops in need of parts or equipment are helped by the Suffolk based business. With parts packed in its Needham Market warehouse but shipped globally using a multitude of logistical solutions – including container ships, planes and parcel post – nothing is standard. With each delivery comes the potential for in-transit damage and with it, claims for lost or broken items.


As Interex’s Operations Director, Lewis Tipping explains, installing a CCTV system unintentionally solved an ongoing operational issue. “We originally installed a CCTV system with Abbeygate CCTV for the usual reasons – with high volumes of parts being shipped we were keen to ensure our security was as good as it could be. However, after we started to use the system and noticed how clear the images were, we realised we could use it to prove how well our goods were packed prior to leaving the warehouse.”


“Now, when a client contacts us to let us know about a damaged item, we can quickly and easily search our footage to view how an item was packed and prove whether it was well packaged. We can send the client the video and they can use it as evidence when discussing the issue with the transport company.”


The Hik Vision Pro-IP system incorporating 4MP High Definition cameras has subsequently been upgraded to store footage for up to 90 days, easily covering the length of time it takes for deliveries arriving by ship. Lewis adds, “Now we have updated to the longer storage time, I’m confident the system will result in covering the cost of installation just from the money saved by not paying out for damaged goods.”


Even with the new development in providing video evidence, the CCTV system continues to prove its worth in unexpected ways. Lewis explains, “We recently had issues with our security alarm being set off overnight. As I can access the CCTV footage from my phone, I could see from home it was simply a rat and not an intruder! I’m very grateful to Abbeygate CCTV for their ongoing support and would encourage any business in a similar situation to ours to give them a call.”
